SIXTEEN PERSONALITY FACTOR (5TH EDITION) (16PF)
Cattell, R. et al.
~ (1993) measures normal personality to predict a wide range of life behaviors. This instrument resulted from Cattell's extensive factor analytic research into the structure of normal-range personality traits. His 16 basic scales include: warmth, reasoning, emotional stability, dominance, liveliness, rule-consciousness, social boldness, sensitivity, vigilance, abstractedness, privateness, apprehension, openness to change, self-reliance, perfectionism and tension. 5 global factor scales may be derived from linear combinations of some of the 16 basic scales: Catell's five 2nd-order factors are: extraversion, anxiety, tough mindedness, independence and self-control. Today, there are many 5-factor personality inventories. Often the authors of these inventories make a claim of validity based on the fact that Catell and subsequent researchers found a 5-factor structure to summarize personality with measurable accuracy. However, examination of these other intruments suggests that perhaps not all 5-factor solutions measure the same global factors.
