ADULT ADOLESCENT PARENTING INVENTORY, 2ND EDITION (AAPI-2)
Bavolek, Stephen
~ (1999) assesses parenting attitudes of Adult and Adolescent Parents -- or those expecting children. The two alternate equivalent forms allow for test-retest using differnt test forms in order to measure change in parental attitudes after a course of parenting training, or over time.
The AAPI-2 is written at a 5th grade reading level. It was originally designed for use in parent-training programs and in assessing the extent to which participants in such a program acquired the learning objectives of the program (see Dr. Bavolek's Nurturing Families programs listed separately). AAPI-2 has become widely used in assessments of parental capacity. Because of its original purpose perhaps, AAPI-2 does not provide a validity scale which would allow the examiner to identify positive impression-management by the examinee. If the test is used in high-stakes assessments, the examiner should consider possibly pairing AAPI-2 with another scale (like CAPI) that provides a useful lie-scale.
Bavolek identified several variables that are consistently found in the research to be predictive of poor parenting. He developed the AAPI to measure these variables. The subscales are: (1) Inappropriate/unrealistic Parental Expectations of the child; (2) Inability to Demonstrate Empathy Towards Children's Needs; (3) Strong Belief in the Use of Corporal Punishment; (4) Reversing Parent-Child Family Roles, i.e. that children meet parents needs rather than parents meeting children's needs; and (5) Opressing Children's Will and Independence.
Computer Administration and scoring CD (English forms only): The examinee responds directly on the computer or an examiner may transfer answers from test-papers for scoring.
CD Kit includes; CD, Key Disc 100 administrations, 50 Form A, 50 Form B and Handbook
RANGE: 14 - adult
ADMINISTRATION: Group or individual
NOTE: AAPI-2 is also available in Spanish with norms based on Spanish speaking American families. (Test forms are in Spanish, Handbook, worksheets & profiles are in English).

MEETING CHILDREN'S PSYCHOSOCIAL NEEDS ACROSS HEALTHCARE
Rollins, Judy; Rosemary Bolig & Carmel Mahan
~ (2005) examines recent changes in the healthcare continuum for children, and explores how these changes are affecting children's psychosocial needs. The authors explain that children have depended upon the efforts which traditionally have been made to "humanize" their experiences in homes, in child-care centres, in schools, community agencies and in ambulatory care and in hospital settings. By humanize, they refer to meeting children's needs for basics such as nuturing, predictability, adequate stimulation, interaction, a sense of control, and mastery of the environment. The authors aptly summarize research across the child-care/services professions on the importance of humanizing They also aim to show how this can and should be done in modern service-delivery to children.

NURTURING FAMILY PROGRAMS: GENERAL INFORMATION
Bavolek, Stephen et al
~ These programs are complete and are suitable for use in social services settings and for provision of court mandated group training of families whose parenting practices have been found to represent probable harm to their children. Since some of the same parent materials are used in different programs, it is useful to buy the first program you intend to use as a kit, and then to purchase sufficient separate materials to offer subsequent programs.
The author's contention is that most families that have interactional difficulties exhibit one or more of the following 4 problems.
- innapropriate developmental expectations of children
- lack of empathic awareness of the needs of children
- strong belief in the use of corporal punishment
- reversing parent-child family roles
By extension, problems in one of these 4 domains precludes the child/adolescent from the nurturing which they require from their family system.
The Available nurturing programs are each listed separately in this catalog. These include:
- ABC's: Parenting Program for
