MEETING CHILDREN'S PSYCHOSOCIAL NEEDS ACROSS HEALTHCARE
Rollins, Judy; Rosemary Bolig & Carmel Mahan
~ (2005) examines recent changes in the healthcare continuum for children, and explores how these changes are affecting children's psychosocial needs. The authors explain that children have depended upon the efforts which traditionally have been made to "humanize" their experiences in homes, in child-care centres, in schools, community agencies and in ambulatory care and in hospital settings. By humanize, they refer to meeting children's needs for basics such as nuturing, predictability, adequate stimulation, interaction, a sense of control, and mastery of the environment. The authors aptly summarize research across the child-care/services professions on the importance of humanizing They also aim to show how this can and should be done in modern service-delivery to children.

NURTURING FAMILY PROGRAMS: GENERAL INFORMATION
Bavolek, Stephen et al
~ These programs are complete and are suitable for use in social services settings and for provision of court mandated group training of families whose parenting practices have been found to represent probable harm to their children. Since some of the same parent materials are used in different programs, it is useful to buy the first program you intend to use as a kit, and then to purchase sufficient separate materials to offer subsequent programs.
The author's contention is that most families that have interactional difficulties exhibit one or more of the following 4 problems.
- innapropriate developmental expectations of children
- lack of empathic awareness of the needs of children
- strong belief in the use of corporal punishment
- reversing parent-child family roles
By extension, problems in one of these 4 domains precludes the child/adolescent from the nurturing which they require from their family system.
The Available nurturing programs are each listed separately in this catalog. These include:
- ABC's: Parenting Program for Parents and Children
- Prenatal Families
- Parents & Children Birth-5 years
- Parents & Children 4-12 years
- Parents & Adolescents
- Teenage Parents and Their Families
- Foster and Adoptive Parents and Their Children
- Parents With Special Needs and Their Children
- Families in Substance Abuse Recovery
- African-American Families
- Children's Sports & Coaching
The two programs for families of children aged Birth-5 and 4-12 years are also available in Spanish.
Facilitator training to assist in qualifying individuals to set up Nurturing programs and to train other facilitators is available at scheduled times or by arrangment. A 6-hour VHS video for facilitator self-training is available for use in training, or for developing familiarity with the program before presenting a training program for facilitators.
The research and validation report will be useful in writing grant proposals, in seeking funding for program support, or in defending the effectiveness of family based parenting programs for treating and preventing child abuse and neglect.
The Multicultural Guide describes 14 cultures in terms of parenting, typical roles, personal responsibility, religion, patriotism, significance of violence, typical punishments, most important values, taboos, and words and phrases to facilitate communication. The cultures described are Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Cambodian, Hmong, Vietnamese, Laotian, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Chilean, Filipino, El Salvadoran, Hawaiian, African-American.

~ a family program for children who are entering kindergarten and their parents. Parents & Children meet once per week for six consecutive weeks in separate groups. Parents learn ways to enhance a child's self-esteem and self-concept, while children engage in age-appropriate games and activities.

Checkpoint parenting pinpoints key times in education (such as kindergarten entry) when parents can smooth the way for their children; teaches support of children through communication with teachers and school personnel; promotes family enrichment as a key to school success; creates a community norm of family participation in schooling.

PARENTING STRESS INDEX (PSI)
Abidin, Richard R.
~ (1995) is a multidimensional measure of stress related to parenting. Scores are helpful in assessing the probability of dysfunctional parenting, the potential for parental behavior problems, and resulting child adjustment difficulties. The Long Form consists of 120 items in a 5-point (strongly agree-strongly disagree) format. Scales include: depression, acceptability, attachment, mood, distractibility, reinforcement of parent, adaptability, isolation, demandingness, role restriction, competence, spouse and health. The Short Form contains 36-items and yields a total stress score derived from 3 scales: parental distress, parent-child dysfunctional interaction, and difficult child.

ommendations. The software allows unlimited scorings if the test is administered in pap-er-pencil format. On-screen computer-administration is sold on a case-limited basis, and requires a key disk.
